This is the score for solo piano album '14 Preludes for Piano'
A prelude is a short piece of music, the form of which may vary from piece to piece.
The 14 preludes in this book are independent pieces and are not coupled with a fugue or a larger composition.
These pieces for piano are inspired by the time I spent studying piano and composition at The Royal College of Music. During my time there I played many of the famous piano preludes.
With the exception of Prelude No.1 (composed in 2020) this book was composed during January and February 2023. None of the compositions are of a descriptive nature; they were influenced by my mood and surroundings at the time of writing.
This is the first time I have written in this pure form - previously I have always taken my inspiration from something or someone.
The musical forms I have used are mainly Rondo and Ternary, with some Extended Forms. I also tried to vary the keys of the compositions. I think this is important, as each key gives us a different palette of colour to work with. For example, Prelude
No.10 is a very dark and sad piece of music, so I chose to write in D minor.
Stylistically these compositions were influenced by the great Impressionists such as Claude Debussy and Erik Satie, the Romantics such as Frédéric Chopin and Sergei Rachmaninoff and the Eastern European composers such as Béla Bartók and
Bedrich Smetana. I encountered works by all these composers during my studies and felt that by doing so I was able to play with versatility, whilst developing a deep appreciation for each composer's style.
In essence, my intention when composing these preludes was
to stay true to the genre, whilst creating pieces which varied
in style. You will notice this as you progress through the book,
and hopefully the varied styles make for an interesting journey
through all 14 pieces.
I hope you will enjoy playing my preludes
